Tropical Storm Noel has caused severe flood and mudslide warnings for Haiti, Dominican Republic and Jamaica as up to 20 inches of rain are expected to fall in certain areas of these countries.
Many residents of the Caribbean islands were forced to flee their low-lying homes on Sunday as heavy rains and strong winds caused flash floods and raised concerns of potentially dangerous mudslides along mountainous regions.
It was three years ago that Haiti suffered catastrophic mudslides due to Tropical Storm Jeanne. In that storm more than 3,000 were killed and 200,000 left homeless as a result of mudslides and flooding.
As for Noel, the rain and strong winds have caused rivers to overflow and strong sea surges to swallow many streets.
The storm is currently weakening but expected to regain strength as it crosses over Hispaniola and takes aim at the Cuban coast late Monday night or early Tuesday.
