Porter Wagoner dies of lung cancer at 80

Grand Ole Opry star Porter Wagoner died Sunday of lung cancer at the age of 80. The singer’s spokesperson announced he had been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this month. The music legend died in Nashville, Tennessee while in Hospice care.

Wagoner was responsible for launching Dolly Parton’s music career. They sang many duets together including “The Last Thing on My Mind,” which quickly took Parton to fame.

The pair split in 1974 citing “creative differences.” They remained friends through Wagoner’s $3 million lawsuit against Parton. Parton visited him in the hospital last week.

Wagoner was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002. He won three Emmy’s and appeared in Clint Eastwood’s movie ‘Honkytonk Man.’ He also had his own television show, ‘The Porter Wagoner Show,’ from 1960 to 1981.
