7.2-magnitude Earthquake Rocks Chile Just ahead of Sebastian Pinera’s Inauguration

The Chilean capital of Santiago has been hit by a serious 7.2-magnitude earthquake, just hours before the inauguration of Sebastian Pinera.

Pinera was already facing the difficult task of reconstruction following the devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake that destroyed much of Concepcion last month. While the extent of Thursday’s damage is not fully known it has left many Chileans rattled.

With thousands still homeless from the initial quake Pinera will have a difficult time restoring a sense of normalcy to the country but he has vowed to bring economic growth and jobs while maintaining the social programs made popular by outgoing President Michelle Bachelet.

Bachelet, who is constitutionally barred from seeking reelection, leaves office with an astounding 84% popularity rating.
