Ocean Isle Beach Fire Believed to Have Started on Deck

The Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina fire that claimed the lives of seven college students early Sunday morning is believed to have started on the deck of the beach house in which they, along with six other students, were staying.

Six of the seven students killed attended the University of South Carolina and were members of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The seventh victim was believed to be part of the Delta chapter at Clemson University.

Firefighters arrived at the vacation house about five minutes after they received the call and by that time the structure was already engulfed in flames and left no opportunity to enter the home. Making things even more difficult was the fact the house was on stilts, making it near impossible to the firefighters to enter the home.

There were six other students, all from USC, that managed to escape the house. The Ocean Isle Beach home was owned by a parent of one of the students. The identities of the students who died in the blaze have not been made public.
