The Big East college basketball tournament is now into its quarterfinals phase with four games on the slate for Thursday and there’s still plenty at stake for each team.
Syracuse won the regular season title in the Big East and could likely lock up a number one seed for the NCAA tournament if they are able to knock off the Georgetown Hoyas on Thursday. The Orange aren’t the only ones playing for NCAA seeding as the Hoyas look to improve their standing come the Madness.
Following the Syracuse-Georgetown showdown the Villanova Wildcats will get their Big East tournament started with a 2:00 p.m. ET matchup against the Marquette Golden Eagles. Villanova could earn a number two seed in the NCAA tournament with a Big East conference tournament title while Marquette is a lock for the tournament but is probably staring at a mid-seed.
Game three action begins at 7:00 p.m. ET as the Pittsburgh Panthers look for a bit of revenge against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Panthers were beat up by the Irish in their last meeting and would love to dish out some payback but Notre Dame is one of the hottest teams in the conference and locked up their NCAA ticket with a win over Seton Hall on Wednesday. The Irish have won five straight Big East games in a row while the Panthers have won eight of their last nine.
In the day’s final matchup the West Virginia Mountaineers will be facing a desperate Cincinnati Bearcats squad that needs a conference tournament title to advance to the NCAA tournament. The Bearcats have won two games in two days, knocking off the Louisville Cardinals on Wednesday, and could pose problems for a West Virginia team that is already looking at a high seed in the NCAA tournament. Tip-off for the Mountaineers and Bearcats is set for 9:00 p.m. ET.
