Many different modalities (another word for treatment method) are used by the holistic treatment centers affiliated with G&G Holistic Addiction Treatment Program. These include the Gestalt modality, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (E.M.D.R.), Dialectic Behavior Therapy (D.B.T.), Neuro Linguistic Programming (N.L.P.), and others.
A brief explanation of the above-listed treatment modalities is provided. These are not intended to be all-inclusive. The Gestalt modality of holistic treatment teaches the patient to live in and concentrate on the present. Whatever happened in the past is over, and while those experiences can be used to assist the patient during psycho-emotional therapy, he is not allowed to dwell on the past.
Holistic methods of treatment that use the Gestalt modality rely heavily on the patient’s input and response to the therapy. The therapist is there only to serve as a guide, but the patient must take responsibility for his actions, his thoughts—in short, for his participation and reaction to the therapy.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (E.M.D.R.) involves the use of visual images, either tacit (such as a picture) or thought of in his mind by the patient which recalls a negative situation in the patient’s life. While the patient focuses on the visual image, the therapist moves his fingers back and forth in front of the patient’s eyes. The patient follows the finger movement with his eyes, interspersed with focusing on the visual image.
Negative feelings that may be generated are identified and discussed, with ways of handling them offered. Positive feelings that occur are reinforced, and suggestions on how to maintain them are given. Dialectic Behavior Therapy (D.B.T.) concentrates on teaching a person how to control damaging or negative emotions which can manifest themselves in different ways, including drug abuse. Neuro Linguistic Programming (N.L.P.) concentrates on behavior patterns and changing, eliminating, or adopting those which can help in overcoming drug addiction and other problems.
