Barton Solvents explosion causes Iowa interstates to be shut down

An explosion at the Barton Solvents chemical plant near Des Moines, Iowa has caused Interstates 80 and 235 to be shut down. Firefighters are battling flames that reach nearly a hundred feet in the air as barrels of chemicals explode in the fire.

Fire crews are forced to back away from the plant as the heat can be felt a half a mile away from the building. Ladder trucks are being used to dump water onto the fire. Firefighters are also concerned that the fire may reach nearby loaded train cars. More than four different fire crews from the Des Moines area are at the scene and more are on standby.

Des Moines Hazmat Crews have been called on scene to monitor air quality as the exploding barrels cause toxic fumes. So far no injuries have been reported.

The Barton Solvents plant supplies blanket and roller washes, alcohol replacements, sopropyl alcohol, silicones, rubber rejuvenators, ink solvents and oil, hydraulic oils, cleaners, and transportation of hazardous waste to graphic design companies.
