Georgetown Hoyas Upset Syracuse Orange in Big East Tournament, Advance to Semis

The Georgetown Hoyas upset the Syracuse Orange 91-84 in the quarterfinals of the Big East conference tournament on Thursday thanks in large part to their ability to get to the foul-line.

While Syracuse was 11-20 from beyond the three-point line and shot 54% from the field they shied away from the paint and managed to get to the foul line just 12 times. In comparison the Hoyas shot 57 percent from the field and went to the line 28 times, hitting 19 of their free-throws.

The Orange actually led 40-37 at the break and built a 59-51 advantage in the second half but the Hoyas used a 13-0 run to grab a 64-59 lead and never let Syracuse back in front. Chris Wright led the Hoyas with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists while Greg Monroe finished with 15 points, 10 boards and 7 assists in the win.

Entering the game Syracuse was a favorite for a number one seed in the NCAA tournament but with their loss on Thursday they could see their position slip while Georgetown may have jumped a few spots come Sunday’s selection.
