Google Inc. will discontinue its censorship of Internet search results in China over the upcoming weeks said individuals close to the matter. The company is not expected to fully withdraw their business from the billion-plus market any time soon.
Willing to compromise somewhat, Google is considering making individual agreements with a number of Chinese agencies so individual elements of its business can operate.
Google is in the process of coming to an agreement with the Chinese government on the future of Google in the nation. Google is working to negotiate operating its Chinese search engine, google.cn, sans the content filters put in place when they first began operations. Chinese officials were reluctant to the idea of allowing more freedom leading Google to wonder which remaining operational elements it can continue in China.
When Google initially threatened to remove the filters, following a massive hacking on the network, the company claimed to be prepared to pull out of China entirely if that was the only way. Now two months later, they appear reluctant to leave.
Since January, the discussions between Google and China persisted with some government officials beginning to submit and others still unrelenting in their views of the tight censorship.
Because of this, it’s thought that Google will make specific agreements with choice ministries so it is not force to exit the nation all at once.
Beyond its search engine, google.cn, has sales, research operations as well as investments in Chinese companies that are expect to continue regardless of the conclusions made.
