Shares of GenVec Inc. (NASDAQ:GNVC) scaled the charts Friday, which was a day after the Biopharmaceutical Company declared its fourth-quarter loss narrowed as revenue grew slightly and research expenses fell.

The Gaithersburg, Md., company said it lost $4.3 million, or 4 cents per share, compared with a loss of $6.4 million, or 7 cents per share, in the final quarter of 2008. Revenue rose to $3.4 million from $3.3 million.

The drug and vaccine developer said research and development expenses fell 33 percent in the quarter to $5.5 million, due mostly to reduced manufacturing and clinical trial costs for its cancer treatment candidate TNFerade.

The drug is being studied for possible use in treating advanced pancreatic cancer and several other cancers. GenVec said the Food and Drug Administration has given TNFerade orphan drug status, a designation awarded to drugs aimed at rare conditions or conditions that have a lack of treatments on the market.
