U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Calls Israeli Settlement Decision “Deeply Negative”

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton voiced her displeasure with Israel’s recent decision to construct new settlements in East Jerusalem, telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the move was “deeply negative.”

Israel’s decision is seen as a major roadblock in the peace process with Palestinians, a process that has been stalled for more than a year. Palestinians have said they would not hold talks with Israel as long as they continued to build in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

While Israel had agreed to halt construction in the area the recent decision to approve the building of 1,600 new homes was said to have been based on security issues in the area. That reasoning has been dismissed by not only the Palestinians but the United States as well which has expressed a strong commitment to Israel’s security.

In Clinton’s conversation with Netanyahu she was said to have told the PM that Israel needed to do more than just say they wanted peace, they needed to take specific actions that reflected that goal.
