It didn’t take long for the gloves to come off at Tuesday night’s Democratic debate in Philadelphia as Barack Obama openly criticized frontrunner Hillary Clinton of shifting positions when “politically convenient” during his opening remarks.
Obama wasn’t the only candidate to attack Clinton, as John Edwards hurled accusations surrounding Clinton’s stance on Iraq and repeated rhetoric she has used in the past that indicates she has no clear objective concerning the issue.
But it was Barack who was clearly the more aggressive on the night and in one brief moment drew a line of distinction between himself and the Senator from New York saying Clinton “has been for NAFTA previously, now she's against it. She has taken one position on torture several months ago and then most recently has taken a different position. She voted for a war, to authorize sending troops into Iraq, and then later said this was a (vote) for diplomacy.”
While Clinton tried to avoid any direct confrontation with her fellow candidates, the attacks continued. Edwards called into question Clinton’s position on Iraq and accused her of flip-flopping, “She says she will end the war, but she continues to say she'll keep combat troops in Iraq and continue combat missions in Iraq. To me, that's not ending the war; that's the continuation of the war.”
Clinton seemingly lent credence to the accusations of flip-flopping when she was asked if she supported New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s push to provide illegal immigrants with the ability to secure driver’s licenses. Clinton responded, “I did not say that it should be done, but I certainly recognize why Gov. Spitzer is trying to do it.”
After the response Edwards quickly pointed out “Sen. Clinton said two different things in the course of about two minutes just a few minutes ago, and I think this is a real issue for the country.”
Obama echoed Edwards’s sentiments saying “I was confused on Sen. Clinton's answer. I can't tell whether she was for it or against it, and I do think that is important.”
