Kids Really Can Save the World!
Says Carolyn Pogue’s new book
After the Beginning is a cosmology for kids. Cosmology involves theories
regarding the origin, evolution and ultimate fate of the universe, a sort of creation story.
Will our creation story, the story of our planet, end in destruction? As news reports are very eager to tell us, a warning-bell is sounding; it is our planet saying "Ouch! That hurts!" Are we going to listen? We will, if we read Carolyn Pogue’s new book with an open heart.
Pogue offers kids a vision of a world where everything fits, where everything has its place. The story serves as a reminder that although people have a place in the world it is not at the top of the food chain consuming everything with no thought for others. Equitable distribution of resources is a key to survival for all earth’s creatures. Complicated issues like this are dealt with by Pogue in an uncomplicated way in this book. Margaret Kyle’s vibrant images add force and poignancy to the work.
In the text, children from around the world cry "Remember! Remember the water! Remember the air! Remember the stories! Remember to share!” This book is a call for us all to embrace childhood and that time when anything seems attainable - after all, that is what a good children's story does. Pogue helps the reader believe that they can do something to help the healing of this fragile planet, and gives kids the tools to make a difference. (Kids as young as 12 years old started many of the organizations mentioned in the notes section.)
In this wise and marvelously enchanting tale, Carolyn Pogue connects the sacredness of the earth, the ecological crisis, and children's leadership in a way that will inspire children and adults alike.
