The coalition led by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki is reportedly leading in the country’s election results, slightly ahead of a coalition led by former prime minister Iyad Allawi.
Maliki’s coalition, the State of Law alliance, is said to be leading in five of the nine provinces partially counted but Allawi’s coalition of Sunni and Shia groups remains within striking distance with Baghdad the main prize.
At stake is a majority in the 325-seat Council of Representatives and with 70 of those seats filled by representatives in Baghdad the capital city will likely be the deciding factor. Final results aren’t expected for about two weeks but Maliki is said to already be in talks with other parties to form a new coalition government.
