The militant rebel group Tamil Tigers were dealt a severe blow early Friday when their political chief S.P. Tamilselvan was killed in an air strike launched by the Sri Lankan government.
The Tigers have been waging a civil war against the Sri Lankan government for more than 25-years in an attempt to create an independent homeland for ethnic Tamils.
While the death of Tamilselvan was seen as a victory for the government, many now fear it will merely escalate into further violence and continue to add to the nearly 70,000 that have died in the civil war.
