Tamil Tigers Political Chief, S.P. Tamilselvan Killed in Sri Lankan Air Strike

The militant rebel group Tamil Tigers were dealt a severe blow early Friday when their political chief S.P. Tamilselvan was killed in an air strike launched by the Sri Lankan government.

Sri Lanka’s Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa warned the Tamil Tigers that their leaders and hide-outs were no longer safe. Rajapaksa told the AP “This is a message that we know their leaders' location. This confirms that our information is very accurate.”

The Tigers have been waging a civil war against the Sri Lankan government for more than 25-years in an attempt to create an independent homeland for ethnic Tamils. Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese dominated government has refused any such concession and has vowed to continue its attack against the rebels.

While the death of Tamilselvan was seen as a victory for the government, many now fear it will merely escalate into further violence and continue to add to the nearly 70,000 that have died in the civil war.
