Ryan Shay, Olympic Hopeful, Dies During Marathon Trials

Olympic marathon hopeful Ryan Shay collapsed and died on Saturday, 5 ½ miles into the men’s qualifier in New York.

Shay, 28, had been an early favorite to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics after recuperating from a hamstring strain that slowed him down in the qualifier in 2004. Earlier this year he placed third in the U.S. 25K championship and looked to be in good shape heading into Saturday’s race.

The Notre Dame graduate dropped near East 75th Street and was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.
