More than 1 Million Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled by Cargill Inc. After E. coli Scare

Cargill Inc. has recalled more than one million pounds of ground beef produced at their Wyalusing, Pennsylvania plant after learning that the meat may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

A routine inspection conducted by the Agricultural Department uncovered a problem with a sample produced on October 8. Cargill is now recalling their ground beef produced from Oct. 8-11. The ground beef had been sent to retailers in ten states and while no illnesses have been reported, the possibility that E. coli bacteria may exist in the product was enough to order the recall.

The ground beef was sent to stores that include Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Go, Wegmans and Weis. Customers who purchased Cargill Inc. ground beef from these stores in Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia are being encouraged to return the product to the retailer or throw the ground beef away.
