Manny Pacquiao added Joshua Clottey to his growing list of victims on Saturday night, drubbing the Ghanaian for 12 rounds before earning a unanimous decision to retain hi welterweight title.
Pacquiao controlled the fight the moment he stepped into the ring at Cowboys Stadium as the nearly 51,000 in attendance saw a man dominate his opponent in such a fashion that it was easy to recognize him as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter.
The Filipino won all 12 rounds on one judge’s card while the other two judges gave Pacquiao all but one round. In the end Clottey became the latest in the line of talented fighters to take a beating at the hands of Pacquiao, joining Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya.
For Clottey the one thing he could hang his hat on was going the distance but that was due more to his defensive approach to the fight more than anything else. Clottey never looked to deliver blows as he seemed content absorbing the arsenal of Pacquiao.
Of course the talk of the fight centered more on what was to come after the battle as the anticipation for a Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight continues. Mayweather is set to fight Shane Mosley on May 1 and while he was originally set to fight Pacquiao the deal fell through after a disagreement on blood testing.
If Mayweather is able to get past Mosley the pressure to finalize a fight with Pacquiao may be too much to ignore and fight fans could finally have the megafight they all want.
