Avalanche in Canada’s Rocky Mountains Kills at least Two, Several Believed Trapped

An avalanche in Canada’s Rocky Mountains has left at least two people dead and fears that many more remain trapped.

The avalanche struck as more than 200 snowmobilers were taking part in an unauthorized event on Boulder Mountain in British Columbia. According to the Canadian Avalanche Center a warning had been issued for the last three weeks concerning the threat of an avalanche in the backcountry.

Those warnings were apparently dismissed by the large group of snowmobilers who gathered to take part in the Big Iron Shoot Out on Saturday, an extreme snowmobiling event.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have confirmed two deaths and as many as 30 people were injured. Rescue crews are continuing their search for people they believe may still be trapped due to the avalanche.
