When Tucker Chapman recorded a phone conversation with his father, Duane “Dog” Chapman, he probably didn’t have this in mind. Following A&E’s decision to suspend production of one of their most popular shows “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” the network is now pulling all reruns as well and it appears likely Dog’s days collaring criminals for TV are over.
Dog Chapman entered popular culture as a fearless bounty hunter that patrolled the globe looking for criminals who were wanted by the police. His popular reality series attracted fans of all ages as his posse of cohorts tracked down countless subjects fleeing the law.
Earlier last week Dog ran into a public relations nightmare when his son, Tucker Chapman, recorded a phone conversation in which the elder launched a verbal tirade against his son regarding his choice in girlfriend.
Tucker’s girlfriend happened to be an African American and most of what Chapman said involved the use of a racial slur that has landed several celebrities in hot water over the past year.
Tucker Chapman happened to record the conversation and then sold the tape to the National Enquirer who then posted the conversation on its Web site.
Dog immediately responded with an apology after the tape was made public and clearly stated that the use of the word was not directed at an entire race but at the character of his son’s girlfriend.
