Cyclone Tomas Slams into Northern Fiji

Cyclone Tomas, packing winds up to 106 mph, has hit northern Fiji as a category four storm, slamming the coast with waves up to 24 feet high and dumping heavy rains across the region.

The cyclone damaged buildings and destroyed crops while forcing thousands to flee from their homes and seek higher ground. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service the conditions could get worse for several of the smaller islands in the area as the Cyclone Tomas continues to gain strength as it heads the northeast.

While officials have not reported any deaths due to the storm the fate of a woman swept away in heavy seas was not known.
