Police in Kenya Accused of Mass Killings Related to Mungiki Gang

Police in Kenya have been accused of killing several hundred suspected members of a notorious gang that has launched a violent campaign on the capital city of Nairobi.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has called for an international inquiry into the deaths of nearly 500 Kenyans believed to be members of the Mungiki gang. Over the past five months the Commission says it has gathered evidence that directly links the Kenyan police force with the killings.

While violence from the Mungiki gang erupted earlier this year, it was a two-day shootout with police in a Nairobi slum that is believed to have sparked the mass killings. In that June shootout several police officers were killed while an estimated 30 Mungiki members died as well.

Since that time police have been suspected of gunning down gang members and dumping the bodies at a Nairobi morgue or outside the city limits. The Kenya police force have denied any involvement with the killings and have indicated it is an attempt to smear the department ahead of December’s elections.

Mungiki gang members are believed to be responsible for several killings related to bus and taxi drivers who refused to pay protection money. In those killings several of the victims were beheaded, believed to be a method of scaring other drivers into complying with their demands.
