Massive Power Failure in Chile Leaves 90% of Population in Darkness

An estimated 90% of Chile was left in darkness following a massive power failure that stretched nearly 1,250 miles across the country. The blackout lasted for several hours before power was restored to most of those affected.

Chile is still facing the overwhelming task of rebuilding following a devastating earthquake that struck two weeks ago. That 8.8-magnitude quake leveled buildings and homes and destroyed much of the infrastructure in Concepcion.

Several aftershocks have been felt since the initial quake on Feb. 27 including a 7.2 temblor that hit the capital of Santiago.

Rebuilding and returning to normalcy has been the focus of President Sebastian Pinera but the newly inaugurated leader has already said the cost could be as high as $30 billion.
