Dennis Pethers talks about conversational evangelism

“Slowly, I came to the point where ... it just struck me that it took less faith to believe there was a God than to believe there wasn’t,” Pethers explained during a recent “Inside LifeWay” podcast. “You can’t prove there is a God, and you can’t prove there isn’t a God. Everything’s built upon faith and how we understand faith, but it just struck me it took less faith to believe there was one than that there wasn’t.
“And then I read about Jesus.”
From there things began to change for Pethers – though he notes he didn’t sprout wings or hear the “Hallelujah” chorus upon recognizing a need for Christ. Instead he developed an immediate need to share the Truth that he’d found.
“So often we think of lost people as ‘them,’ those people out there, whereas in fact they are people that are precious to God,” Pethers said. “The motivation for evangelism, for me, is [that] this missionary God, who sent His son to die for us, loves these people. And He wants me to love them as well.”
Pethers said the key to evangelism is simply being willing to talk about your faith, which is what his study “More to Life” encourages believers to do. In “More to Life,” evangelism is defined as “leaving the person I’ve met with a better understanding of God than they would have had if they’d never met me.”
