Rehab Chic?

A celeb guest on Dr. Phil suggests 12-step groups may become the newest form of group therapy for the non-addicted.

Dr. Phil aired an episode of his show on January 20 titled “Trends for 2010: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.” In it, the talk show host featured Katie Riggs, an actress, comedian and producer of Dance Your Ass Off, who shared her predictions for the coming year. One of the more surprising tongue-in-cheek trends she listed for the year was attending 12-step meetings as a way of networking.

Since counseling may be financially out of reach for more people this year due to the struggling economy, Riggs suggested that non-addicts would flock to 12-step groups as an alternative to one-on-one counseling. The group support would be a secondary benefit, though, to the networking aspects. Riggs joked that it’s long been a practice in Los Angeles and the entertainment industry and that the trend would sweep across the nation in 2010.

While Riggs’ predictions got a good laugh from the audience and there’s likely a kernel of truth in what she said, 12-step groups and other forms of treatment are serious, life-saving programs.
