Finland school shooting leaves 8 dead

A shooting in a Finland school has left 8 dead and 12 with injuries. The shooter was an 18-year-old male identified as Pekka Eric Auvinen. He appeared to have planned the mass shooting out in videos which he posted on YouTube.

Auvinen opened fire at Jokela High School in Tuusula, Finland. Police have confirmed two girls, five boys, and the school headmistress are dead. Twelve others were injured. The shooter appears to have tried to take his life after the shooting. He is in critical condition at Toolo Hospital.

Auvinen has no criminal record but published a video online demanding war on the “weak-minded masses.” Videos linked to his YouTube account called “Sturmgeist89” contained many violent images including Nazi imagery, footage from the Columbine shooting, and clips from the Waco siege in the United States.

Auvinen identified himself as “Sturmgeist89” and said he chose the name because it means “storm spirit” in German. Earlier on Wednesday he posted a video titled “Jokela High School Massacre – 11/7/2007.” A picture of the school appeared in the video and then faded into a picture of Auvinen pointing a gun at the camera. The video is played with the track “Stray Bullet” by rock band KMFDM.

“I am prepared to fight and die for my cause. I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection,” he wrote in a message posted on the site.

Police described the scene of the shooting as “very chaotic” and said students were “breaking windows in an attempt to escape.” The shooting is said to be the first of it’s kind in Finland.
