Police deny any involvement in the mass killing, but a residents of Mathare (the second largest slum in Kenya) are backing a report by the state-funded human rights commission that claims police executed 454 people who were suspected to be apart of Mungiki.
Most of the suspects were killed by a bullet to the back of the head and then dumped in different places around the country despite permanent police road blocks.
“People were arrested in a crackdown against [Mungiki] and have never been found,” said a restaurant owner in Mathare. “Relatives say they disappeared without a trace and they don’t know if they are dead or alive.”
