Rescue Efforts Continue for Passengers on Cruise Ship Run Aground

For passengers of the Spirit of Nantucket this was not what they had in mind when they signed up for a relaxing ten-day cruise.

On its way from Alexandria, Virginia to Charleston, South Carolina the Spirit of Nantucket struck something in the Intracostal Waterway off the Virginia coast and began taking on water. Within a short period of time the captain of the 207-foot vessel was forced to run the ship aground to prevent it from sinking.

Members of the Coast Guard, police and firemen were called upon to rescue the 66 people on the damaged Spirit of Nantucket.

No injuries have been reported as the evacuations continued through the midmorning hours.
