Russia asks United Nations to stop Georgia protesters violence

Russia has urged the United Nations to try to stop Georgia leadership of allowing police to use violence against protesters and peaceful demonstrations. Georgian police have used extreme measures to stop anti-government protests including tear gas, water cannons, and beatings.

“We are convinced the world community, major human rights bodies…the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the OSCE should urge official Tbilisi to stop violence and fully respect human rights and resolve its internal political issues constitutionally, without the use of force,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili declared a state of emergency on Wednesday in light of the 6 day protest. He has accused Russian special services of causing the unrest. Russian officials responded by saying the claims were “hysteria.” Kamynin said Russia is a “friend of Georgia” not an enemy.

“The television footage ran around the world has evidently shown what democracy Georgia-style is – it’s a tough crackdown on a peaceful demonstration, closures of free media outlets and beatings of foreign journalists,” Kamynin added.
