Jokela High School gunman leaves suicide note, planned to burn school

As Jokela High School mourns the loss of 8 students in a shooting massacre, Finland investigators are trying to determine why 18-year-old Pekka-Eric Auvinen went on a killing spree at the Tuusula school Wednesday before fatally shooting himself.

Investigators say a suicide note was found “saying goodbye to his family and a message…indicating his will against society.” Police say they have obtained printed material and internet postings that suggest Auvinen was planning the attack.

“I am prepared to fight and die for my cause. I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection,” Auvinen wrote in a message.

Police say they believe Auvinen picked his victims randomly and shot most of them in the head or upper body. Some were only shot a few times while others were shot nearly 20 times. 69 shells were found at the scene as well as flammable liquid poured on the floors and walls of the second floor suggesting Auvinen was going to set the school on fire. It was never ignited.

Six students were killed as well as the school nurse and principal. More than a dozen others were injured while trying to escape through windows. Grieving students and friends of the victims placed candles outside the school today. A memorial service was also held.
