San Francisco oil spill after ship hits Bay Bridge

A cargo ship hit San Francisco’s Bay Bridge on Wednesday spilling 58,000 gallons of oil into San Francisco Bay making this oil spill the largest in the bay in almost a decade. The U.S. Coast guard worked to contain the spill with floating boom. Nearly 8,000 gallons was removed with skimmer ships and absorbent pads.

It is unclear how much of an affect the oil spill had on wildlife. The oil spread to several landmarks including Alcatraz and Fort Point. Nearly 10 beaches were closed after the incident and the public was warned not to swim or fish in the area.

Coast Guard officials are concerned about how much the oil will spread and say they are “committed to protecting the environment.”

The oil was leaked into the bay when a container ship, Cosco Busan, hit the base of a suspension tower. A gash believed to be around 80 feet long and 20 feet wide was cut in the ship. The bridge was not damaged.
