Somali Pirates Release Chemical Tanker and North Korean Crew

Somali pirates have released Singapore-operated chemical tanker and the vessels 28 North Korean crew members after a ransom of about $3.5 million was paid.

The MV Theresa VIII had been under pirate control since November when pirates seized the ship as it passed through the Somali Basin north of Seychelles on its way to Kenya.

Shortly after the ransom was paid the pirates disembarked the MV Theresa VIII and allowed the crew to sail.

Despite efforts from the international community to stop such attacks Somali pirates have continued to seize ships sailing off the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden, demanding large ransoms for their safe release.
