U.S. Envoy George Mitchell Postpones Trip to Israel as Tension Continues to Mount

The once solid relationship between the United States and Israel has continued to show signs of wear as news that a planned meeting of U.S. envoy George Mitchell and Israeli President Shimon Peres had been postponed.

At the heart of the growing dispute is Israel’s decision to move forward with the construction of 1,600 Jewish homes in East Jerusalem, an area that had been part of an agreement that placed a freeze on settlement building. Angering the U.S. even more was the timing of the announcement, coming when U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden arrived in Israel last week in an effort to bring Israelis and Palestinians back to peace talks.

Palestinians have said they would hold no such talks as long as Israel continued construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Israel had earlier agreed to a settlement freeze in the areas but they have refused to recognize the disputed area as part of the agreement and have said the most recent construction was being carried out as a security measure.

The standoff between Israel and Palestinians has done a number on the Israel’s relationship with the United States. Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren has said relationship is now at its lowest point since 1975.

Mitchell’s postponed trip won’t help matters any as the United States continues to await a “formal” response from Israel concerning questions about the recent settlement construction.
