ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Stooges and The Hollies Headline Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2010

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has inducted five performers for the class of 2010, adding Swedish pop band ABBA, British rock band Genesis, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, American rockers The Stooges and the English rock group The Hollies.

ABBA dominated the music charts from 1972 to 1982 with hits including “Dancing Queen,” “Waterloo,” “Super Trouper,” and “The Winner Takes it All” and have been credited with more than 375 million albums sold worldwide. ABBA was originally nominated in 2003 but failed to get the necessary votes for induction but in 2009 they were nominated once again and got the nod.

Genesis formed in 1967 with Peter Gabriel (vocals), Anthony Phillips (guitar), Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (bass & guitar) and Chris Stewart (drums) and in 1970 Phil Collins joined the band on drums after a series of departures. Collins would eventually replace Gabriel as the lead vocalist and remains with Rutherford as the longest tenured members of the band.

Jimmy Cliff is widely credited for helping popularize reggae across the world and gained widespread recognition for his hits that included “Many Rivers to Cross,” “I Can See Clearly Now,” and “You Can Get It If You Really Want.”

The Stooges, headed by punk legend Iggy Pop, were seen as a major influence in the progression of punk rock as well as heavy metal. While never achieving huge commercial success the band played a big role in the work of artists ranging from Kurt Cobain and Henry Rollins to the Sex Pistols.

Originally introduced through the British Invasion, The Hollies formed in 1962 and quickly cemented themselves as one of the most popular bands in the UK. They would eventually enjoy success in the U.S. market, cracking the Top 10 with singles like "Bus Stop," "Stop Stop Stop,"  "Carrie-Anne," "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother," "Long Cool Woman" and "The Air That I Breathe."
