Arthur H. Bremer was released from the Maryland Correctional Institution on Friday, 35 years after he shot and paralyzed Alabama Gov. George Wallace during a presidential campaign stop at a shopping center in
Now 57, Bremer has been ordered to stay away from any elected officials on the local, state, federal or foreign level as well as any current candidates seeking office.
Bremer had been sentenced to 63 years after being convicted of attempted murder but the sentence was reduced to 53 years following an appeal.
Wallace had been the source of great consternation when he ran for the Democratic nomination in 1972. As a proponent of segregation in the 1960’s, Wallace incited rage among many of those inside his own party as well as social activists.
