Crude oil futures added to gains in late afternoon electronic trade Tuesday after the American Petroleum Institute said U.S. crude oil inventories rose 403,000 in the week ended March 12, less than analysts expected. Analysts expected an increase of 1.9 million barrels for the week ending March 12. Crude oil for April delivery recently gained 27 cents, or 0.3%, to $81.97 a barrel in electronic trade. The API said gasoline supplies fell 3.654 million barrels and distillate stocks fell 756,000 barrels. Analysts expected gasoline supplies to fall by 1.5 million barrels and distillate stocks to fall by 1.6 million barrels. The Energy Information Administration will release the more closely followed government's estimates on Wednesday.
