By a matter of minutes the West Region will kick off the 2010 NCAA Tournament and the opening game could cause serious problems for several brackets as the #7 BYU Cougars (29-5) take on the #10 Florida Gators (21-12). While many are picking Florida to knock off BYU the Cougars did play in the tough Mountain West Conference. That being said BYU did lose twice to New Mexico and twice to UNLV. The Gators enter the NCAA Tournament having dropped four of their last five games.
BYU should hold off Florida. Tip Off set for 12:20 p.m. ET.
The #4 Vanderbilt Commodores (24-8) and #13 Murray State Racers (30-4) is the second game on the slate for the West Region and this another matchup that has many taking the underdog. Vandy put together a 12-4 mark in the SEC and two of those losses were to Kentucky. The Commodores did beat Missouri out of conference as well as Tennessee twice and Florida twice, all three are in the NCAA tournament. The Racers finished 17-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference but while they have gained a lot of attention heading into the NCAA Tournament the only team they played that made the field, California, beat them in the opening game of the year.
Vanderbilt should take care of Murray State. Tip Off set for 2:30 p.m. ET.
The #2 Kansas State Wildcats (26-7) will be facing the #15 North Texas Mean Green (24-8) following the BYU-Florida game. Kansas State had been challenging for a #1 seed but a loss in the Big 12 conference tournament left them with a solid #2 seed. The Wildcats could easily make a run to the Final Four. North Texas is simply overmatched in this West Region game.
Kansas State rolls over north Texas. Tip Off set for 2:40 p.m. ET.
The #5 Butler Bulldogs (28-4) enter the NCAA Tournament with a lot to prove as they take on the #12 UTEP Miners (26-6). Butler rolled through the Horizon Conference with a perfect 18-0 record but many are picking them as the 5/12 upset of the opening round. Much of that has been based on Butler’s number of close games but the Bulldogs do own victories over Ohio State and Xavier and have won 20 straight, something the Miners can’t boast. UTEP put together an impressive record but really don’t have a quality win on their resume.
Butler will disappoint those looking for an upset and edge UTEP. Tip Off set for 4:45 p.m. ET.
