Pakistan and Iran Sign Deal for Construction of Natural Gas Pipeline

Pakistan, in desperate need to meet the growing energy demands of its people, has signed an agreement with Iran for the construction of a natural gas pipeline that will pump 750m cubic feet of gas per day to the country.

According to officials the pipeline, which came at the cost of $7.6 billion, should be operational by 2015 and ease the electricity shortages that have hampered Pakistan.

The deal has been on the table for some time now but Pakistan has struggled to come up with the financing for the project. Under the deal each country will be responsible for building the section of pipeline that runs through their territory.

Gas will be moved from Iran’s South Fars gas field through the pipeline to Pakistan’s Balochistan and Sindh provinces.
