Fiji has begun to receive aid from Australia and New Zealand following the devastating effects of Cyclone Tomas which battered the north and east of the Pacific island nation on Monday and Tuesday.
While only one death has been confirmed there have been reports that several people remain missing and communication and accessibility to several areas have been cut off. In the aftermath of Cyclone Tomas the island’s government declared a state of emergency as the category four storm destroyed many homes and uprooted trees.
The 130mph winds caused significant sea surges along the coasts producing severe flooding in the eastern Lau group of islands as well as in Vanua Levu.
Australia and New Zealand have both stepped p their aid to Fiji, airlifting relief supplies that included food, water and tarpaulins. Aid to Fiji could increase after the extent of the damage is fully realized.
