New Study Suggest Hearing Aids Improve the Effects of Tinnitus
According to a new study by Deafness Research UK, tinnitus can be helped or eliminated with the help of hearing aids. In the study of 1553 tinnitus suffers, 22% said a hearing aid reduced their tinnitus when wearing one digital hearing aid and 39% noticed a reduction in tinnitus when wearing 2 digital hearing aids.
Tinnitus is the perception of sound with the ear. There are many things that cause tinnitus including ear infections, wax buildup and medication. However, the most common cause of tinnitus is noise induced hearing loss. Many people that that surrounded themselves in loud music (such as Peter Townsend) or loud noises at work suffer from tinnitus. Studies estimate that as many as 20% of people over the age of 55 suffer from tinnitus.
I have seen similar positive results in my career of fitting hundreds of people with hearing loss and tinnitus. I have seen tinnitus lessen or be eliminated by the correct fitting of hearing aids. High frequencies of hearing are damaged and when a hearing aid stimulates those frequencies, the tinnitus often is either eliminated or greatly reduced. Not only do digital hearing aids stimulate the high frequencies where tinnitus occurs, they provide a mask that softens tinnitus. People with tinnitus often say that the noise of a fan will lessen tinnitus. When a hearing aid brings up sound it allows everyday sound to become mask out tinnitus.
