Nigeria’s Acting President Goodluck Jonathan Dissolves Cabinet

Nigeria’s acting president Goodluck Jonathan has reportedly dissolved the country’s cabinet, a cabinet that had been picked by the elected President Umaru Yar’Adua.

Jonathan has been in the position of acting president since February as Yar’Adua continues to undergo treatment for an undisclosed illness. Yar’Adua went to Saudi Arabia for treatment back in November and while he recently returned to Nigeria he has yet to make a public appearance.

On February 9 Jonathan was handed executive power by the National Assembly, effectively allowing him to sign legislation, move ministers and release oil funds. His recent decision to dissolve the cabinet is seen as an effort to cement his authority in the country.
