The Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament will feature a pair of schools that are strong favorites to make a deep toward the national championship. Both the Kansas Jayhawks and Georgetown Hoyas will see action on Thursday while Tennessee and UNLV will both try to avoid upset bids to advance.
It will be the #8 UNLV Rebels (25-8) getting things started in the Midwest Region as they take on the #9 Northern Iowa Panthers (28-4). UNLV has had a solid season with impressive wins over Louisville and Arizona out of conference. Northern Iowa has also put together a strong season having dropped just three games since November 21.
Northern Iowa should score the minor upset in the game. Tip Off set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
The #3 Georgetown Hoyas (23-10) will be facing the #14 Ohio Bobcats (21-14) in their opening round game. Georgetown went through a rough stretch late in the season when they dropped four of five but bounced back to win four straight before losing in the Big East conference tournament finals to West Virginia. Ohio had a losing record in the MAC but got hot during tournament time and captured the conference title to get in.
Georgetown’s talent is just too much for Ohio, this will be a blowout. Tip Off set for 7:25 p.m. ET.
It’s no mistake that the #1 Kansas Jayhawks (32-2) earned the overall number one seed in the tournament and they should be making short work of the #16 Lehigh Mountain Hawks (22-10) who punched their ticket to the dance with a Patriot conference tournament title. There really isn’t much to say about this one other than Kansas needs to avoid any stupid injury.
Kansas could double up on Lehigh in this game. Tip Off set for 9:30 p.m. ET.
In perhaps the most interesting matchup of the Midwest Region opening round the #6 Tennessee Volunteers (25-8) will face the #11 San Diego State Aztecs (25-8). The Volunteers have shown multiple personalities this year with impressive wins over Kentucky and Kansas but ugly losses against Georgia and USC. While the Aztecs have only one really bad loss on their record, Wyoming, their big wins, New Mexico and UNLV, were both at home.
Tennessee’s time in the SEC will be enough to get them past San Diego State. Tip Off set for 9:45 p.m. ET.
