Rowan was left alone with David who initially claimed he went out on the night of November 3, leaving the 4th grader home alone. He then admitted to borrowing his mother’s car but refused to tell police what he did with it for the 5 1/2 hours he was gone.
Collings admitted to the rape and murder of Rowan during questioning on Friday. Sherriff Mick Epperly said Collings told authorities he and Spears took Rowan to his camping trailer where they both raped her before strangling her with a cord. It is unclear who strangled the girl.
They then dumped her body in a cave 10 miles from her hometown of Stella, where she was found a week later. Spears and Collings were charged with one count of first-degree murder, forcible rape, and statutory rape.
