Benazir Bhutto Calls on Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf to Step Down

As her supporters were being arrested, former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto called upon President Pervez Musharraf to step down immediately amidst the country’s struggle for democratic freedom.

Bhutto has gained the support of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif who told the AP

“What I'm hearing on TV, her statements today that she has cut off all her links with Pervez Musharraf and wants him to resign from both offices, I think it is a positive development and a step toward achieving the objectives of the opposition.”

Musharraf has been seen as a roadblock to further development of democracy in Pakistan and the recent arrest of thousands of Bhutto supporters has solidified the belief that he should step down immediately.

The President suspended democracy in Pakistan earlier this month. In the crackdown, Musharraf has shut down media outlets as well as arrested several lawyers and opposition leaders who staged protests after several Supreme Court justices were fired.

Bhutto is currently under house arrest and many anticipate an exile order to be issued by Musharraf.
