Congressman Killed as Bomb Explodes Outside Philippine House of Representatives

A bomb exploded at an entrance to the Philippine House of Representatives late Tuesday night killing Rep. Wahab Akbar along with a congressman’s driver.

The bomb detonated just as a House session was ending and congressman were approaching their vehicles. It is believed that the explosive was planted on a motorcycle near Akbar’s car and when he neared the vehicle the explosion occurred.

Akbar had been the target of a Muslim extremist group, Abu Sayyaf, after working to eradicate their operations. Police have indicated that it appeared as if Akbar had been the intended target.

A driver of a congressman was killed as well while at least eight others were injured.
