Is There a Cure for Drug Abuse or Addiction?

Not in the technical sense of the word, there isn’t. There’s no pill, shot, or liquid that can be prescribed for drug abuse or drug addiction that will fully erase the urge or desire for drugs that an addicted person experiences or has experienced.

However, just because a cure is not available does not mean that drug abuse treatment won’t help, because it will. Just as there are chronic diseases in which symptoms can be controlled through daily medication and/or lifestyle changes, so, too, can the same techniques work with drug abuse or drug addiction.

People who suffer from alcoholism can take a drug called Antabuse while they are undergoing drug abuse treatment. (Remember, alcohol is a drug, just like heroin, cocaine, or any prescription drug; therefore, the person seeking help for alcoholism is undergoing drug abuse treatment.)

Antabuse causes physical symptoms when a person consumes alcohol while taking this drug. The symptoms are uncomfortable enough that the person is encouraged not to continue drinking. The cessation of drinking then allows the drug abuse treatment protocols to be more successful.

And, as mentioned earlier, some diseases can be controlled with lifestyle changes. So, too, can drug abuse or drug addiction. Part of the drug abuse treatment process involves teaching recovering addicts how to avoid situations where the temptation is strong to use drugs, or how to handle stress triggers that in the past caused one to use drugs.

If any treatment center promises a “cure”, then there is cause for suspicion, and another treatment center should be considered. Reputable drug abuse treatment centers realize there is no real cure for drug abuse or drug addiction, and will not make claims saying otherwise.
