Tens of thousands of people fled refugee camps Tuesday as rebel troops attacked government forces. The rebels were apparently not targeting the camps but the government forces in the area. Many of the camps were looted by the rebels after they were deserted.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said residents crowded the street to Goma attempting to flee the area. “The main road toward Sake was crowded with people; we has difficulties getting through,” said UNHCR safety advisor Pierre Nezroo. Torrential rains have also affected the refugees and UNHCR spokesman Ron Redman says the constant rain already has many in a “weakened state.”
Congolese President Joseph Kabila has attempted to order a cease fire but efforts at peace have been halted as the fighting continues. More than 30,000 refugees abandoned camps across the Democratic Republic of Congo today.
