Alcoholism treatment center offers new approach to treating alcoholism
New approach to alcoholism treatment offered in Connecticut and New York
NEW YORK | CONNECTICUT- There’s no other substance known to man to be so destructive, yet its use in social situations so widely accepted as alcohol. Alcohol addiction is one of the very few addictions that can truly be secretive for a number of years, as consuming it is commonplace for the majority of people.
“Alcohol addiction can be difficult to detect, initially because its use is so widespread and accepted,” states a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Seeing a person drink socially is routine in our culture. An alcoholic can appear to be only a ‘social drinker’ to other people, yet completely out of control in private. We call those individuals ‘closet drinkers’.
“A big obstacle to overcome with an alcoholic is their accessibility of alcohol and also the widespread acceptance of its use - as there’s no other drug that you can legally purchase on any street corner worldwide. Because of this, when helping an alcoholic conquer their addiction, their treatment plan must encompass non-traditional treatment methods. At Mountainside, we utilize a holistic approach to alcohol rehab. One of the things we do is teach coping mechanisms through various avenues such as meditation and yoga as well as exercise. We equip the addicted individual with skills that are necessary to pinpoint their triggers to use their drug of choice and then give them alternatives to using. This is particularly critical in alcoholism treatment, when their drug of choice is so readily available. For the alcoholic, they have to be able to make a split-second decision on whether or not to go get a drink after work with co-workers, or order a drink with their meal.
“Traditional twelve-step programs emphasize the necessity of changing people, places and things, but without a meaningful way to do that, that critical advice becomes virtually useless. At Mountainside, our goal is to teach the alcoholic how to integrate themselves back into a culture that is ridden with alcohol and live and experience a meaningful life without ever picking up a drink.”
Alcohol addiction can be easy to mask and hard to detect. One of the warning signs of alcoholism is neglect of things that were once important such as family, work, and school or poor performance at work or school. Another red-flag is legal trouble that’s caused by drinking- a DWI or disorderly conduct. One of the crucial warning signs, the one that can be the turning point for an alcoholic is a change in a close relationship as a result of drinking—increased fighting, isolation and even physical abuse.
