Staph Screen Check (SSC) Available at Environmental Diagnostic Laboratory (EDLab)

Identification of potential sources of the gram positive Staphyloccoccus sp. bacteria in the indoor environment is critical to the overall treatment

Atlanta, GA.-- The government reported in its first overall estimate that more than 90,000 Americans get potentially deadly infections each year from a drug-resistant gram positive bacteria called staph "superbug." Identification of potential sources of the gram positive bacteria in the indoor environment is critical to the overall treatment.

As a result of the widespread staph occurrences the scientists at Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory (EDLab) have developed a simple yet inexpensive environmental test kit for the identification of Staphylococcus sp. called the Staph Screen Check (SSC).

The process is simple: the SSC sample kit and supplies are mailed to the customer; the customer collects the sample on approved collection device provided.  The sample location data is placed on the chain of custody (COC) form and then mailed with the sample to the award winning-world class AIHA accredited facility at EDLab. The sample collection procedure takes less than 2 minutes to perform and the lab results are available via email in less than a week. The SSC kit can be used in the home, healthcare, schools, office facilities, hospitality, and mass transit, among others.

Staph Screen Check (SSC) evaluations are recommended for the following scenarios:

  • Proactive Measures
  • House Keeping QA/QC
  • Pre Cleaning Identification
  • Post Cleaning Clearance Testing
  • Associated Health Concerns

    S. aureus is common and infection usually only causes pimples or boils, although infections can spread to surrounding tissue. These bacteria can be carried by healthy people, living on their skin or in their noses.

Dr Rajiv Sahay, Director of lab services at EDLab stated: "In recent years, these newly emerged resistant bacteria stains have become more common in hospitals and it has been spreading through ineffective housekeeping, prisons, school gyms, locker rooms, in poor urban neighborhoods and other indoor environments."

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is treatable only with a few antibiotics. Recently there has been an alarming epidemic caused by community-associated (CA)-MRSA strains, which can cause severe infections that can result in necrotizing fasciitis (the "flesh-eating disease") or even death in otherwise healthy adults outside of healthcare settings

MRSA is common in hospitals, where it can kill weakened patients.  In the United States, CA-MRSA is now the cause of the majority of infections that result in trips to the emergency room.  In October researchers reported that MRSA was far more common than had been known, with 94,000 hospitalizations and almost 19,000 deaths in 2005 in the United States.

Recommended SSC samples locations vary from water fountains handles, shower stalls, door knobs, counter tops, furnishings, etc…The SSC is an environmental sample for the identification of Staphylococcus sp. in the indoor environment. For clinical analysis visit your physician.
