Day one of the NCAA college basketball tournament featured a number of upsets as Georgetown, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Marquette and Richmond all fell to double-digit seeds and as the day two begins there will be number of schools with a newfound respect for the Mid-Majors and their capabilities come March Madness.
Number one seeds Duke and Syracuse will get their NCAA tournament underway on Friday and while neither team is expected to face trouble both schools would like to send a message to the rest of the field.
The Blue Devils open with Arkansas-Pine Bluff who earned the right to face Duke after knocking off Winthrop in the play-in game. Arkansas-Pine-Bluff had plenty of experience with big-time programs this year having faced UTEP, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, Missouri and Kansas State- all schools that made the NCAA Tournament.
Syracuse won’t be taking Vermont too lightly as they know all too well that the Catamounts are capable of upsets. While no #16 seed has ever knocked off a #1 seed the Orange would like nothing more to make sure this game is over by halftime.
While Thursday featured five double-digit seeds advancing into the field of 32 the schedule for Friday could match that figure and easily send the tournament into a chaotic mess for those keeping brackets. #13 Siena has been pumped as a darling of upsets while #12 Cornell has gained fashion coming from the Ivy League. #12 Utah State has also been given an edge by many in their matchup with Texas A&M while #10 seeds Georgia Tech and Missouri are each capable of knocking off Oklahoma State and Clemson respectively.
